Rubell Collection Shows African-American Artists

November 20, 2008

Puma-sponsored exhibition shows 31 African-American artists

MIAMI – Since the Rubell Family started collecting in the 1960’s, they have always collected African-American artists as a part of their broader mission to collect the most interesting art of our time. Approximately three years ago, they found there was a critical mass of emerging African-American artists, and began the process of understanding what seemed to be a new movement. When they asked these artists about their influences, they heard some of the same names over and over: Robert Colescott, Renée Green, David Hammons, Barkley Hendricks, Kerry James Marshall, Gary Simmons, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, and Carrie Mae Weems. They had been collecting almost all of those artists for decades. Perfect conditions for a new exhibition that runs from December 3, 2008 to May 30, 2009. Read more

This spanking new Art Deco style hotel has the eateries Fiorella’s Lobby Bar, Fiorella’s Tuscana Cucina and a poolside tiki bar. World’s Smallest Post Office, Ochopee

August 12, 2008

The United States Post Office in Ochopee is smaller than a postal truck. If you are driving on Tamiami Trail from Naples to Miami, do look for the world’s smallest post office. And here is a secret hint.

While Alligator Alley, also known as Interstate 17, is faster across the Everglades, if you have just a few more minutes, Tamiami is not crowded, and there is no toll. Many locals use it.

There is talk of selling the road to private interests, and tolls could go up. If this is true, we all might be seeing alot more of this little USPS relic.
