Meet Mimo: The Miami Modern Conference March 11

MIAMI – Join local civic leaders and renowned historians for a conference on Miami Modern architecture, set for March 11-12, 2011.

This international conference on Miami’s Mid-Century Modern architecture and design, called Meet Mimo, will feature national and local experts on Mid-Century Modern architecture.

Mimo came after World War II, and translated the style of International Modernism into innovative designs with tropical exoticism, glamour and fun.

For the seminar, a “Living Legends” luncheon will honor renowned architects of this era. Highlights include a Bacardi reception, a boat tour of the Marine Stadium, a house tour of iconic Modernist homes, and walking tours of the Morris Lapidus Historic District along Collins on Miami Beach, Lincoln Road, North Beach, Bay Harbor Islands, MiMo Biscayne Historic District and the University of Miami’s Modernist structures.

Miami-Dade County historic preservation leaders discuss the challenges and successes of preserving Miami’s mid-century treasures such as the Miami Marine Stadium, MiMo Biscayne Historic District, Morris Lapidus District, Bay Harbor Islands, Everglades National Park’s “Mission 66″ structures, and more. Panelists include local experts: William Cary, Teri D’Amico, Melissa Memory, Randall Robinson, Allan Shulman, and Don Worth.

Dade Heritage Trust is proud to honor architects who have made outstanding contributions to Mid-Century Modern design in Miami and celebrate the vibrant legacy. Welcome by Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower and George Neary. Living Legends Honorees are:

  • Alfred Browning Parker for a lifetime of innovative residential designs (introduced by Randolph Henning)
  • Hilario Candela for the Miami Marine Stadium (introduced by Jorge L. Hernandez)
  • Enrique Gutierrez for the Bacardi Building on Biscayne. (introduced by Hilario Candela)
  • Jan Hochstim for his academic leadership promoting Mid-Century Modern architecture. (introduced by Sonia Chao)
3:00 p.m.—4:15p.m. REMEMBERING AN ERA: REFLECTIONS BY AND ABOUT MIMO ARCHITECTS

Moderator: Jan Hochstim, Professor, University of Miami School of Architecture
A conversation with Living Legends, Alfred Browning Parker, Hilario Candela, and Enrique Gutierrez. Joining the conversation will be Deborah Desilets, a Morris Lapidus collaborator and author of Morris Lapidus: Architecture of Joy; Sarah Giller Nelson granddaughter of Norman Giller and co-author of Designing the Good Life: Norman Giller & The Development of Miami Modernism; and Thorn Grafton, grandson of Russell Pancoast.
